The great salon chandeliers of nineteenth-century Paris and London were built to fill a room with light from a single point. They gathered dozens of candle arms in tiers around a central stem, set a cut-glass dish under every candle to catch the wax and scatter the flame, and dressed the frame in crystal. When electricity came, small fabric shades were added to each light, turning the glare of bare bulbs into a warm, even glow.

The Ivory Descent follows that tradition at full scale. A fluted brass column with leafy sprays and a crystal cluster carries two tiers of cast arms, a smaller crown above and a wide ring below, thirty lights in all. Each arm is a broad curl of acanthus leaves ending in a clear cut-glass dish hung with faceted pendeloques and leaf-shaped crystal drops, with an ivory linen shade above, scalloped at the hem and edged in gold braid. A gadrooned brass bowl and finial finish the base.

Finding the right spot

At 48 inches across, the Ivory Descent is made for large rooms: a drawing room or double-height entrance of about 18 by 18 feet or more, or a dining table of 96 to 120 inches. Over a table, hang it so the lowest crystal sits 30 to 36 inches above the table top. Elsewhere, keep at least 7½ feet of clearance below it. Use warm white (2700K) E14 candle LED bulbs on a dimmer for a soft glow through the linen.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry brush to reach into the leaves. Wipe the crystals and glass dishes with a barely damp lint-free cloth and dry them at once. Freshen the linen shades with a soft brush. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.

Before you order

This chandelier is made to order. It takes thirty E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. It is delivered in parts with its chain and canopy, and the crystals and shades are fitted on site. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
