Description

A six-light chandelier in antique brass: curling scroll arms and a crown of acanthus leaves, with six inverted pear-shaped shades of feather-cut glass and small crystal drops.

Bulbs not included | 2-year warranty

When electric light arrived in the 1880s and 1890s, chandelier makers could do something no candle or gas flame allowed: turn the light upside down. The new electroliers of late-Victorian and Edwardian houses hung their bulbs downward inside shades of cut glass, so the light fell through the cuts and threw a soft sparkle around the room. Glass houses in Britain and Bohemia cut those shades by hand into leaves, flutes and feathers, and cut-glass electroliers of this kind lit drawing rooms from London to the bungalows and princely palaces of India.

The Plume is made in that spirit. A slim turned brass stem rises to a crown of upright cast acanthus leaves, hung with small clear crystal drops. Six brass scroll arms curl outward from the stem, each topped by a small acanthus bud. From the end of every arm hangs an inverted pear-shaped shade of clear glass, cut all over in a deep overlapping feather pattern and capped with a brass leaf collar. A pine-cone finial finishes the stem below. The brass has a warm antique finish, darker in the recesses of the leaves.

What makes the Plume distinctive

  • Feather-cut glass: Six pear-shaped shades cut in a deep leaf pattern, hanging downward like old electrolier shades.
  • Acanthus crown: Upright cast brass leaves at the top of the stem, hung with clear crystal drops.
  • Scroll arms: Six curling brass arms, each finished with an acanthus bud and a brass leaf collar.
  • Made to order in India: From Delhi Brass, a fourth-generation lighting and decorative metalwork company.

Finding the right spot

At 29 inches across, the Plume suits a dining table of 48 to 72 inches, a round breakfast table, or the centre of a drawing room, bedroom or entrance hall of about 12 by 12 to 15 by 15 feet. The downward-hanging shades put the light where you need it, so it works well low over a table. Over a table, hang it so its lowest point sits 30 to 34 inches above the table top. Elsewhere, keep at least 7 feet of clearance below it. Use small clear warm white (2700K) E14 bulbs on a dimmer, so the feather cuts sparkle without glare.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry brush to reach into the leaves. Clean the glass shades and crystal drops with a barely damp cloth, then dry them at once. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.
