Prabha means radiance, the halo of light that surrounds something sacred. At its heart is a large disc of hand-beaten brass, every inch of it dimpled by the hammer so the surface shimmers as you walk past. A slim brass rod passes in front of the disc and curves down into a small brass bowl, and beneath the bowl hangs a little temple bell, the way a lamp stand in a temple carries its bell. It is perfect for a home mandir.

The light comes in two layers. An LED strip hidden behind the disc throws a soft halo onto the wall all around it, so the disc reads like a sun in eclipse. A small spot set into the bowl shines upward across the beaten surface and catches every dimple. Switched off, it is a piece of sculpture in antique brass; switched on, it glows.

Finding the right spot

Prabha is perfect for a home mandir: mount it on the wall above or beside the altar so the halo frames the deities and the bell hangs just clear of the shelf. It is equally at home on a wall of its own above a console in an entrance, at the end of a corridor, over a bench, or as a pair on either side of a doorway. Mount it so the centre of the disc sits at about 160 to 170 cm from the floor, or with the bell about 40 to 50 cm above a console or mandir shelf. Leave at least 25 cm of clear wall around the disc so the halo can spread. It looks best against a plain or softly textured wall.

Care

Switch off at the mains before cleaning. Dust with a soft, dry cloth or brush, working into the hammered dimples. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.
