Rococo was born in Paris in the 1730s, in the reign of Louis XV: a light, playful style of C-scrolls, S-scrolls, shells and curling acanthus leaves. Its favourite wall light was the girandole, a candle sconce set with a mirror so that every flame was doubled in the glass and the room grew brighter. This light follows that idea.

The backplate is cast in brass and pierced like lace: a crest of scrolls and leaves rises to a small fleur-de-lis, a beaded ring frames the round mirror, and a little cast mask sits below it above a hanging acanthus drop. Two curved arms sweep down and up to cups of spiky acanthus leaves that hold the candle lights. The antique finish settles darker into the recesses, so the casting reads clearly even when the lights are off. Two small fabric shades embroidered in gold come with it, for a softer, warmer light; leave them off for bare candle bulbs.

Finding the right spot

Hang it above a console or chest of drawers, beside a doorway, or in a powder room or entrance vestibule, where it can be seen as a piece in its own right. A pair looks especially good flanking a bed or a large mirror. Mount it with its centre at about 165 cm from the floor, or with the lowest point about 30 to 40 cm above a console. For a candle-like glow, use warm white (2700K) E14 candle LED bulbs.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry brush to reach into the pierced scrollwork. Clean the mirror with glass cleaner sprayed onto a cloth, never directly onto the light. Freshen the shades with a soft brush. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.
