In eighteenth-century France, the bras de lumière, or light-bearing arm, was the workhorse of the salon. Under Louis XV, bronze makers turned these arms into whiplash C-scrolls dressed in acanthus, and later, under Louis XVI, the backplates were calmed into round medallions and rosettes tied with ribbon bows. The Scroll Rosette brings the two together.

Its tall, narrow backplate carries a pierced rosette medallion with a central boss inside a ring of petals, topped with a ribbon bow and finished below with a drop finial. A single acanthus arm curls out in a C-scroll and carries two candle cups in line, one near the wall and higher, the other further out and lower, each on a frilled petal bobeche. Because the lights sit one behind the other rather than side by side, the sconce stays only 5 inches wide and suits slim wall spaces. Two cream knife-pleated drum shades, banded in taupe, soften the light.

Finding the right spot

The slim backplate makes the Scroll Rosette ideal where wall space is tight: either side of a headboard, between a door frame and a corner, on narrow piers between windows, or flanking a mirror or fireplace. Mount it with its centre about 60 to 66 inches above the floor, or with the shades about 18 inches above a bedside table. Use warm white (2700K) E14 candle LED bulbs for a soft glow through the pleats.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the brass with a soft, dry brush to reach into the scrolls and rosette. Freshen the pleated shades with a soft brush. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.
