The Tiered Slat Sconce is built from five flat bars of brass set in symmetrical steps. The centre bar is the widest and tallest, and stands furthest forward; the pair beside it sits a little further back and stops a little shorter, and the outer pair steps back and down again, so the piece reads like a façade in miniature. The brass is brushed vertically and given an antique finish that darkens towards the edges.

A slim LED tube is hidden behind the centre bar. Switched on, it lights the narrow gaps between the bars, so the light comes out as fine vertical lines and a soft wash on the wall rather than a visible bulb. At 6 inches wide and only 3 inches deep, it fits where most wall lights will not.

Finding the right spot

Use a pair on either side of a mirror, console, bed or doorway, or a run of them along a corridor. Mount each with its centre at about 150 to 160 cm from the floor. Beside a mirror or console, leave 15 to 30 cm between the light and the edge of the piece it frames.

Care

Switch off at the mains before cleaning. Dust with a soft, dry cloth, following the direction of the brushing. Avoid metal polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners, which will strip the antique finish.
