Florence has made gilt-iron lighting for centuries. Its workshops forged slender iron scrolls by hand, dressed them with small leaves and curled tips, and finished them in soft, worn gold, so that a large chandelier could look light and airy rather than heavy. In the great houses of Italy and France these frames were then hung with Bohemian crystal: swags of beads looping from arm to arm and faceted drops falling below, so the whole piece glittered when the candles were lit.

The Firenze follows that marriage of Italian ironwork and crystal. Thirty thin S- and C-scroll arms rise in three tiers around a stem of turned urns and a cut-glass column, each arm trimmed with small acanthus leaves and ending in a clear cut-glass dish and a slim ivory candle sleeve. Swags of crystal beads are draped between the arms, and faceted pendeloques hang all round, down to a crystal-hung finial. The frame is mild steel, hand-finished in an antique gold paint that is soft and slightly matte, with darker shading in the recesses.

Finding the right spot

At 48 inches across and only 36 inches tall, the Firenze spreads its light wide without hanging low, which suits drawing rooms, dining rooms and entrance halls of about 18 by 18 feet or more, or a dining table of 96 to 120 inches. Over a table, hang it so the lowest crystal sits 30 to 36 inches above the table top. Elsewhere, keep at least 7½ feet of clearance below it. Use warm white (2700K) E14 candle LED bulbs on a dimmer so the crystal sparkles without glare.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the frame with a soft, dry brush. Wipe the crystals and glass dishes with a barely damp lint-free cloth and dry them at once. Avoid water, polish, abrasives and chemical cleaners on the painted frame, which will damage the antique gold finish.

This chandelier is made to order. It takes thirty E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. It is delivered in parts with its chain and canopy, and the crystal swags and drops are fitted on site. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery.
