A ten-foot hall lantern of curved glass and leafy scrollwork, with twelve candle lights in two tiers, made to fill a double-height stairwell.

In the palaces and great houses of eighteenth-century Europe, the grandest staircases were lit by tall glazed lanterns hung in the open stairwell. Glass kept the candles burning steadily in the draughts that ran up the stairs, and the lanterns were scaled to the architecture: some ran almost the full height of the void, so that the light travelled with you from the hall to the landing. Their frames were crowned with scrolls and leaves, so they read as pieces of decorative ironwork by day.

This lantern is made in that spirit and at that scale. Six tall panels of curved clear glass are held between slim posts in mild steel, finished in an antique gold paint that settles darker into the recesses. The crown curls outward in scrolls dressed with cut acanthus leaves and leaf finials, rising to a tall leafy finial; at the base, scrolled legs hung with leaves gather to a pointed drop. Inside, a central stem carries two tiers of six candle lights, one high and one low, so the whole ten-foot column glows evenly from top to bottom.

Finding the right spot

This lantern is made for a double-height stairwell, a double-height entrance hall or a hotel-scale lobby, with a ceiling of at least 20 feet. Hang it in the open void of the stairs or centred in the hall, with the bottom at least 8 to 10 feet above the floor so it clears the space beneath. It looks best seen from both the ground floor and the landing. The chain is cut to your ceiling, so tell us the drop you need. Use warm white (2700K) E14 candle LED bulbs, and add a dimmer.

Care

Switch off and let the bulbs cool before cleaning. Dust the frame with a soft, dry brush. Clean the glass with glass cleaner sprayed onto a lint-free cloth, never directly onto the lantern. Never use abrasive pads or chemical cleaners on the painted finish.

Before you order

This lantern is made to order and priced per piece. It takes twelve E14 bulbs, which are not included, and comes with a 2-year warranty. Production takes 10–14 days, followed by 4–6 days for delivery. A lantern of this size is delivered in parts and assembled on site.
